About ColorQ Human Rights Corner

We were originally going to call this page the "All The Cruel Things We Do To Each Other" page, but that title was a little long, so we settled for "ColorQ Human Rights Corner." ColorQ Human Rights Corner features stories that don't get a lot of attention from Western "mainstream" media. The daily horrors faced by children, women and men usually do not receive attention in the West unless their tragedy affects Western economies. The Western media usually describes the human struggle of various regions in terms of how that struggle affects the men in power, and how that in turn affects the economy. But we believe the suffering of the "common" people is at least equal in importance to the problems faced by those who rule their countries. This page provides a space where their stories can be heard.

The Focus

You will probably notice a significant portion of the articles deal with the topic of rape as a tool of aggression and oppression. We often hear or read about great battles and the fall of governments. But while the rape of ordinary women and the murder of unknown children do not make the headlines, they happen between the lines. Perhaps it is "assumed" that gang rape and torture is a common side-effect of war, and thus not worthy of mention. Or perhaps such details are too sick for morning paper readers in peaceful realms. After all, reading the paper is supposed to be relaxing, is it not? To sell more papers, one must avoid making the readership vomit up their breakfast in distress. But is the comfort and peace of mind of those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to afford a newspaper and read it at leisure more important than the awareness that all's not well with the world and a sense of empathy with those who are violated in the worst way imaginable?

Until the day the world refuses to accept rape as a 'normal' cost of incarceration or conflict, and rightly see it as murder of the soul, Human Rights Corner will have to dedicate space to documenting the history of rape of both men and women. Just because something is "old news" doesn't mean it does not deserve to be heard. We are looking for both present and past tragedies. We need to learn more about the rape and murder in Rwanda, in Algeria, in Burma; the forced concubinage and slavery in Sudan; the "disappearances" in Latin America.
