I happened to speak to a Chinese student on campus. Since I had just spent a year studying in China, I was happy to meet a student from China. So I asked her where she is from. She replied in a fake American accent, "I'm from the East Coast. I'm sure you don't know where that is."
I was shocked and disgusted at her pretentiousness. It was obvious from her accent and general demeanor that she was from China, and not a Chinese American or a Chinese from any other country for that matter. And she wanted to deny that. I am also a foreigner with an accent. I don't see the need to hide my accent or pretend I am American.
