Lighter-skinned blacks more acceptable to Asians than darker-skinned blacks

A Korean co-worker had an aunt who married a black American man and had a daughter. The Korean man was always emphasizing how light-skinned his uncle and cousin are, and how the cousin could pass for white.

One of my Japanese students, a middle-aged man, said he wouldn't want his daughter to marry a dark skinned black person , maybe a very light skinned one would be ok. He said, "I am racist" and I said, "Yeah, you are racist". It was a little refreshing because he had an opinion and we could talk. A lot of students have the same feelings but won't even go there.
