I attended a Russian/Ukrainian wedding in the United States. Most of the guests were from the former Soviet republics. There were a few Americans present.
When the bride's aunt stood up to make a speech, she said, "I know some of you are American, but since the bride and groom invited you, I'm sure you must be good people, so you are welcome too."
I was so appalled that my jaw dropped. Does she mean by implication that Americans are by default "not good people?" And she said it so casually and unconsciously that I don't think that she even realize how offensive she was.
