A retired Turkish judge finds himself taking care of a Kurdish orphan through unexpected circumstances. He is forced to face his prejudice against Kurds and re-evaluate his relationship with his faithful domestic help Sekine, whose Kurdish heritage he had consistently refused to acknowledge.
This 2001 film had been controversial in Turkey due to its depiction of violence against Kurdish activists. But the theme of a stern old man gradually opening his heart to a defiant child has appeal beyond borders.
