Modernity meets traditional magic in Nigerian director Tunde Kelani's Thunderbolt. In this modern adaptation of Othello, a Yoruba man Yinka and an Igbo woman Ngozi marry despite community opposition. But the young couple's happiness unravels when the jealous Yinka, having doubts about his wife's fidelity, places a curse on Ngozi. Ngozi is given the impossible task of lifting the curse while trying to preserve her marriage.
Despite the temptation to blame the failure of her marriage on her husband's ethnicity, Ngozi ultimately refuses to resort to ethnic stereotyping, stating "There are only good and bad people. Those are the two tribes."
