The Africa Fund statement:

... last year Mauritanian human rights leaders were sentenced to 13 months in prison for giving interviews about slavery. People who supported them were sent into internal exile. Anti-slavery organizations are effectively banned. Newspapers are forbidden even to report the existence of slavery. The Mauritanian President has declared anyone who speaks out against slavery to be an enemy of the state.

Amnesty International Report 1999:

Five prisoners of conscience were sentenced to terms of imprisonment and at least five others had their movement restricted. Three other prisoners of conscience were put under house arrest. One prisoner of conscience was tried and acquitted. One person was sentenced to death.
